NOTE:  One area "seemingly" often overlooked when discussing servicing the 1300, just as it is on other bikes, is the absolute need to change the brake fluid after perhaps 2 or 3 years on average.  Why is this so important and sometimes even critical?  It's a known and documented fact that in most situations that window of time represents about the maximum one should ride before their bike's brake fluid becomes ineffective to the point where safety becomes an issue.  It's the inherent nature of brake fluid to absorb moisture, and that moisture reduces the efficiency of the fluie and its boiling point significantly.  That will cause the brakes to fade and, as occasionally found with the rear brake when overworked, it can become temporarily 100% lost with total freeplay of the brake pedal, just as if there is no brake there at all.

And when you choose to perform this service, do yourself and whomever it is that rides with you a big favor by choosing only a high quality DOT 4 fluid, one that's a step above the factory supplie OEM fluid.  It will "make a difference."  There are some excellent synthetic brands of brake fluid out there with superior performance and higher temperature ratings.

While replacing the brake fluid is not necessarily so difficult, it still can become quite a tedious project.  Be sure you understand the steps required from start to finish prior to undertaking this task.  The 1300 Service Manual will assist you with this.

When necessary, for those wanting to create an easier way to bleed the brakes, Speed Bleeders are often used today and make it much simpler to perform this part of the service.  For further information, contact SHANE at SS CUSTOM CYCLE (www.sscustomcycle.com), who can help you with these Speed Bleeders (~$20).

BRAKE PADS:

DP and EBC are two brands that offer upgraded pads that will provide consistent and superior braking performance for your 1300.  Again, contact SHANE when brake pads are needed.  You'll be glad you did.
