Maintenance - Installing Progressive Front SpringsProgressive Spring Install
This was copied from Scott Nourse’s web site:
Installation was straight forward-
1. Remove handlebars
2. Raise front end so the front wheel is barely touching
3. Remove end caps (could be under pressure)
4. Pull out metal spacer
5. Drop front wheel until spring is reachable
6. Pull out spring, pushing oil back down into the tube as you go
7. Cut PVC spacer to 3”
8. Install spring, then washer (I reused the stock), then PVC spacer
9. Put it back together.
These springs totally get rid of the annoying clunk the stock setup had, plus reduce ride and deliver a nicer, firmer ride all around.
It’s a great idea!
It’s no wonder the stock setup clunked! With the forks fully extended the metal spacer was not touching the end caps.
Whenever the front wheel would drop suddenly the spacer would drop and then slam back up into the end caps, creating the infamous clunk.
While the clunk might be fixable by adding an extra washer and short PVC spacer to the stock spring,
the progressive rate of these springs produces an even better ride and improved handling over stock.
It’s highly recommended!
P.S. The Progressive number is 11-1126. http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=PROG%2DFORK
